Pasture Rule![]() | Genetically Modified Alfalfa Many Straus Family Creamery supporters care about keeping GMOs out of organic and natural products. Right now, your help is urgently needed to stop the release of GMO alfalfa, a move that could destroy organic and non-GMO dairy in the United States. Background: In 2006, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) sued the Department of Agriculture (USDA) for its illegal approval of Monsanto’s genetically modified (GM) Roundup Ready alfalfa. The federal courts sided with CFS and banned GM alfalfa until the USDA fully analyzed the impacts of the plant on the environment, farmers, and the public in a rigorous analysis known as an environmental impact statement (or EIS). USDA released its draft EIS on December 14, 2009. The 60-day closed on March 3, 2010. It was the first time the USDA has done this type of analysis for any GM crop. Therefore, the final decision will have broad implications for all GM crops. For more information, click here. According to the Center for Food Safety, who is working incredibly hard to on the issue, "more than 300 public interest organizations, farmers, dairies, retailers and organic food producers from the U.S. and Canada delivered a strongly worded letter to USDA, calling upon it to deny approval of Monsanto’s genetically engineered, Roundup Ready alfalfa (GE alfalfa)." Thank you to all the Straus Family Creamery supporters who took action on this issue and let the USDA know that you care about keeping GM ingredients out of your food. We're waiting now to see how our comments will be considered. Stay tuned! Additional Resources: * Draft Environmental Impact Statement * Supplemental documents |
