Ever wonder how Earth Day began? The first #EarthDay was held on April 22, 1970, when San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson started a grassroots demonstration asking Americans to join in to raise awareness about environmental issues. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe.

There are tons of fun activities to join in your neighborhood or simple things you can do at home to make a difference today or throughout the year. Here is some earth-loving inspiration:

James Beard, award-winning food journalist and Resident Chef for @npr's @hereandnowradio @kathygunst, recently visited our founder Albert Straus' dairy farm in Northern California, immersing herself in how our #OrganicYogurt is made and our sustainable organic farming history. Of her visit, Kathy notes "When you look around Tomales Bay, you know why this yogurt tastes so good. Because the grass is so green and beautiful."

It's our pleasure to share with you Kathy's three recipes featuring our Organic Greek and European Style Yogurts. The first recipe is a perfect to segue from spring into summer and grilling season. The Spiced Yogurt Marinated Chicken pops with the addition of a few warming spices. Cooking hack: the lactic acid in the yogurt tenderizes the meat and lends a tangy, slightly sour flavor to the chicken. Second, the Yogurt-Orange Tea Cake is lighter and tangier than its cousin, the pound cake, plus it stores longer thanks to the moisture from the addition of yogurt. And last but not least, Kathy's Maple Yogurt Panna Cotta with a Caramelized Pistachio Topping is sure to impress your guests. It's made with a combination of yogurt and heavy cream, flavored with maple syrup and vanilla and topped with pistachio brittle. We'll have all three, please!

Growing up on a dairy farm, our founder Albert Straus, has always had a love for ice cream. When he was at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, he majored in Dairy Science. He developed a business plan for his senior thesis to start a manufacturing facility to make ice cream. More than a decade later in 1994, he started Straus Family Creamery, and soon after, he made his ice cream dreams come true when we debuted our first organic vanilla bean ice cream (pictured second).

Today, we have 12 flavors of our organic super premium ice cream available. Each one delivers a rich, creamy texture and exceptional flavor no matter how you scoop it. This year, we expanded into more regions across the country via @sprouts and @wholefoods. We also offer our ice cream at independent natural grocers and invite you to enjoy this refreshing treat year round!
